....the goose is getting fat.....

I went to see Australia this afternoon. I enjoy these type of movies. It was basically a cattle drive and could have been John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. One thing I wonder about a lot of Aussie movies....does there always have to be an Aborigine reference and/or story-line? I guess their history with those people is pretty miserable ... and recent.

Someone asked me recently to recommend some restaurants in Duluth...hmmm. That's a hard one. (That's what she said.) I mentioned the Pickwick. In a sort of old-fashioned way,I love lunch at the Pickwick. BTW...the Pickwick onion rings are some of the best in the world. When I was a kid, my parents used to take me for Chinese food in West Duluth at the Cody Hotel. It was the epitome of non-authentic, American-style, Chinese food. (Lots of sprouts) For some reason, they served toast with the Chop Suey. Just regular buttered white-bread toast. For years, I loved having toast with my egg foo young, or moo goo guy pan. The Chopstick Inn on 4th street is one of those great non-authentic Chinese food places. Cheap and tasty...and next time I'm going to ask if they can make me toast.

Across the bridge in Superior, Wisconsin are some great bar/hamburger joints. I like a burger to be juicy and greasy and slopping and full of fried onions and stuff. Mostly, I like to eat and talk. Fuck the food.

A few years ago I discovered a radio-guy named Phil Hendrie. The show he was doing at the time was syndicated from LA and was one of the best things I had ever heard on radio. There were many times when listening to him on the radio, I had to pull over to the side of the road. I was laughing so hard I was afraid I would head-on the oncoming traffic.

He is still around, but the show is different. I still listen to copies I have of those old shows. It was a very special talent that was just..natural.

I listen to a lot of talk radio and some are good at it....some are not. Lately I have been listening to Bill Bennett on his syndicated morning show Morning In America. He was in the Cabinet as Secretary of Education....been around politics a bit....written several books...lots of face time on TV as a talking head. Not one of these resume items any indication of a talent on the radio. There is just something there. He has a natural talent.

When I told my Dad that I was going to be a DJ he said it sounded like something that came out from under a rock. I hope that radio doesn't totally ruin Bill Bennett's life.

I remember oh so well my parents' reaction when I dropped out of college to work in radio full time. I don't believe they spoke to me 'til I dropped out of radio and went back to school full time. These days I think the big mistake was the second dropout and not the first.

I have eaten at the Pickwick a couple of times and found the food very good. 'Course you don't want to hear this but I believe I had seafood both times. I've also eaten at a couple of the Grandma's joints and they were okay. (I have a couple of daughters at UMD.) What's the name of the burger dive in Superior? Sometimes you just gotta have the burger. One of these days we should do lunch up der in da nort country.

I have not heard Bill Bennet but on your recommendation I'll try to give him a listen. Is he on any of the Sirius/XM channels?

And the goose isn't the only thing getting fat.

Rob do you remember the Jerry St. James edition of the Night Before Christmas at U100? God that was great!
As I remember it started out "It was the night be for Christmas and all through the house you could here my wife slap me as I unbuttoned her blouse"
I wish I had taped it.
